How do I stop making the same mistakes over and over again?

How do I stop making the same mistakes over and over again?

To change your behavior you have to become aware of your negative patterns and what rewards you may be getting from them. Once you’re aware, you can set up strategies to facilitate new behaviors to replace the old patterns. Participating in group seminars on Emotional Intelligence can provide the tools for rapid and lasting paradigm shifts.

There are plenty of articles out there outlining how to change habits, alter behavior and turn over a new leaf.  And by plenty I mean so many articles you could fill one whole page with links to them (read to the end for a sample!)

But all of this doesn’t give us the tools to make a change.

Neural pathways get set and the more times we repeat a behavior or thought pattern the more deeply entrenched those behaviors become in our personalities.  The best way to change such deep-seated patterns is… with help.  You can spend years in therapy but if you’re really good at self-sabotage, you’re likely to find a therapist who agrees with you and waste a lot of time and money.

The best way, in my experience, and that of thousands of others, is through group participation.  Companies like Landmark and Choice will remove your self-limiting barriers for you, whether you’re ready or not.  It’s in their training - just remove the participants defenses and they will be open to change.  Tony Robbins will motivate you to change, and his message of “re-examine all of those fundamentally unquestioned thoughts: Why do I expect certain things? Why do I behave in certain ways?” is exactly the right message… but honestly, that motivation and inspiration wears off because you’re passively listening to a presentation instead of actively participating in changing your OWN thought patterns.

Possibilities seminars approaches the changes in behavior from a heart-centered place.  Through participation in groups of no more than 25, Michelle Saul leads you to your own self-realization where YOU choose to shed your protective mechanisms and step willingly into your best self.

Keep reading books like Garry Ridge’s book on being a great leader and Erik Wahl’s book Un-Think on unleashing your inner creative.  But don’t let yourself off the hook.  Dive in and spend 3 days shedding the extraneous patterns that hold you down.  Step into your best self.

Some of those articles on how to change behavior...  Tips are great but tools are better!

From WikiHow’s advice:

  • Noticing Mistakes and Understanding Them

  • Discover what triggers your behavior.

  • Write down Your Goals

From Psychology Today’s myriad articles:

Toddler Brain:

Mistakes we repeat with regularity rise from the Toddler brain. They turn short-term setbacks into long-term losses and temporary pain into long-term suffering. In the Adult brain, we learn from past mistakes, grow from them, and soar above them.

Look within to change behavior:

Confront your unconscious belief systems and find new ways to address them.

From Big Think’s article on refocusing on the future:

It's better to think about what we want to accomplish and try to view it from a fresh angle… that can lead us down a more successful road.

From  Science Alert, this great video:

Explaining that when we're confronted with our mistakes, our brains slow down and try to figure out why we screwed up, leading us to dwell on the error instead of the solution.

From Entrepreneur, this article on staying creative

A creative mindset is one that evaluates problems, adapts to circumstances and implements lasting, valuable solutions.
